During a recent trip to Burlington we drove through periods of sunshine followed by clouds and rain and back to sunshine again. It was quite beautiful and the experience lured me away from singing and took me into the realm of simple thoughts on matters of a more practical nature. No matter what the weather the road beneath us, except for a few minor turns, stretched unwavering in the direction of home. Whether it was sunny and bright or cloudy with rain the road didn’t change. When the rain came pouring down we didn’t slow down or try to avoid it, we just turned the lights on and kept our eyes looking forward. Sometimes the road crested a hill and sometimes dived into a valley but neither height nor depth or changing weather altered our momentum towards the safety and warmth of home. This particular road passes by the western slopes of the Green Mountains rising in the distance that in places is nothing but bare rock. During the periods of rain the clouds obscured our view but when the sun came out we were delighted to see the mountains had not moved but stood like sentinels overlooking our path. These observations reminded me how God has set before all of us a path to walk that ends in His presence in the beauty and security of heavenly home. Along our life journey we encounter all sorts of weather. There are days bathed in the brilliant light and warmth of the sun that fill us with joy and shouts of “Praise the Lord”. Sometimes the steel gray clouds roll in and bring with them heavy downpours, sleet, snow and cold, but regardless of the conditions the road decreed for us by the Master Engineer has not changed. Our path may take us soaring heavenward on wings of eagles or plummeting uncontrollably into a dark valley but still there is no change in direction. And those mountains that alternately appear and disappear remind us God is our Rock, eternal and unchanging and though we may at times not see Him as clearly as we should, He’s there watching over us. I’m thankful for simple thoughts like these gleaned on an ordinary trip along familiar roads while meditating upon my Lord.
